GPU vs CPU : What's the difference

If you planning to build a gaming computer and confused about spending more money among CPU vs GPU then you have come to the right place. Both of these are essential components and they contribute most in computer performance.Stick to the end of this blog to find out the detailed comparison between GPU vs CPU.

What is CPU

Well CPU also called as Central processing unit is known as Brain of the Computer is microprocessor circuit. It executes instructions given by user in a particular program. It performs all arithmetic, logical, input and output operations. There are certain factors while choosing processors such as clock speed, cores and threads.Higher the clock frequency and more the number of cores and threads better the CPU will perform. For choosing a computer you can go with Intel processors for gaming and if you are looking for best value for price then you can go with AMD processors.Just like computer processors there are also mobile processors. Qualcomm and Mediatek are the major manufactures for android processors and Bionic Chip processors are used in iPhone.

What is GPU

GPU also called as Graphical processing unit is a single chip microprocessor circuit that accelerates the creations of images, videos, animations.CPU lags at certain tasks therefore GPUs are designed to overcome the problems of CPUs.GPUs are used in computers, mobile phones, gaming consoles etc.GPU do parallel processing it has less clock speed than CPU but has huge number of cores than the CPU.Unlike CPU,GPU is focused only on one task such as running and rendering game graphics, animations and video production. You can run games better if you purchase a mid range GPU than purchasing a high end CPU.
Nvidia is famous company which manufactures computer graphic cards.

Difference between GPU and CPU

Well CPU is multi tasking it can handle many processes at a  time but GPU is focused on one task and it can out performs CPU in single task such as Gaming,Video editing,Image processing, handling big data, bitcoin mining and deep machine learning.CPU is suitable for serial processing whereas GPU is suitable for parallel processing.CPU has got powerful cores but they are less in number whereas GPU has less powerful cores but they are huge in number.Memory consumption is high in CPU but in case of GPU memory consumption is low.Intel has launching it's 10 generation processors recently which are very powerful for gaming and single core benchmark and AMD has launched it's 3000 series processors which gives you very good value for price. RTX 2080 Ti is the current best graphic card for gaming and Quadro GV1000 is the best graphic card for workstations for  running professional computer-aided design, scientific calculations and machine learning.

THINGS TO REMEMBER
  • GPU is an upgrade of CPU but remember it can never replace your CPU.
  • When you are building a custom PC it is important to choose correct GPU to pair with CPU because if you pair a high end GPU with a potato CPU your PC will start bottle necking and you cannot get the most performance out of your GPU.
